Fake 1st Page Guarantee

Wednesday, July 26th, 2006

Folks I am a little miffed this evening. I saw an advertisement from a competing SEO firm today that looked a whole lot like one of our advertisements. It stated that they guaranteed 1st page ranking. It caught my eye immediately so I went to their site and what I saw really rubbed me the wrong way.

First of all they are promising ranking in as little as 7 days and for only $40 a month. It’s obvious that they are using PPC to accomplish this. What got me was that they conveniently do not mention in plain obvious language that this is what they are doing. An unsuspecting consumer might assume that they are getting guaranteed 1st page organic rankings (the ones that appear in the middle of the page and not the little boxes over on the right.

In fact the consumer will be responsible for the click through fees in addition to the $40 a month fee. Nothing beats 1st page organic rankings and they are worth paying more than $40 a month for since they end up paying for themselves in the quality traffic they bring in.

A recent study from Outsell.com found that a whopping 15% of all PPC clicks are fraudulent. Holy crap that’s alot! In addition a similar study found that on average 66% more traffic went to organic listings than paid ads.

So consumer beware…make sure and ask your prospective SEO company if they are using PPC disguised as SEO. After all getting a 1st page ranking on Google with PPC is super easy but it won’t be cheap for long.
