Fake 1st Page Guarantee

Wednesday, July 26th, 2006

Folks I am a little miffed this evening. I saw an advertisement from a competing SEO firm today that looked a whole lot like one of our advertisements. It stated that they guaranteed 1st page ranking. It caught my eye immediately so I went to their site and what I saw really rubbed me the wrong way.

First of all they are promising ranking in as little as 7 days and for only $40 a month. It’s obvious that they are using PPC to accomplish this. What got me was that they conveniently do not mention in plain obvious language that this is what they are doing. An unsuspecting consumer might assume that they are getting guaranteed 1st page organic rankings (the ones that appear in the middle of the page and not the little boxes over on the right.

In fact the consumer will be responsible for the click through fees in addition to the $40 a month fee. Nothing beats 1st page organic rankings and they are worth paying more than $40 a month for since they end up paying for themselves in the quality traffic they bring in.

A recent study from Outsell.com found that a whopping 15% of all PPC clicks are fraudulent. Holy crap that’s alot! In addition a similar study found that on average 66% more traffic went to organic listings than paid ads.

So consumer beware…make sure and ask your prospective SEO company if they are using PPC disguised as SEO. After all getting a 1st page ranking on Google with PPC is super easy but it won’t be cheap for long.

Choosing the lesser devil

When a small business which respresents the majority of the business community in the U.S. goes looking for an SEO provider they will encounter two extremes, neither of which seems to be tailored to small businesses.

The first extreme is the “pay us $30 and we will submit your site to 5 million search engines”. Unfortunately to some this might sound like a good deal since it’s so cheap. The problem is that only the top few search engines are creating most of the search engine traffic so the other few million or so they submit to are actually frivolous at best and at worst may be flagged as being in a “bad linking neighborhood”. The takeaway here is that this route is a total waste of time.

The second extreme is the big SEO agency model. Here a small business may get results but they will end up paying through the nose for it. They will most often pay more than they will be able to make back from the new leads generated. The worst part about this situation is that for all that money the agency will not guarantee anything so alot of times it’s a bit of a risky proposition for a small business working with a limited budget.

What Click Response did was situate themselves right in the middle of those two extremes with a model that is both affordable and guarantees bona fide results in the way of 1st page rankings across the top search engines that matter. The focus is on ROI and catering to the small business owner specifically.

The marketing equation should always be something along the lines of $2 in and at least $3 in return for it to make sense. In the SEO world the only result that matters is a first page listing in a major search engine for your most relevant key phrases. Click Response clients typically see a 30-40% increase in qualified leads and new sales usually pay for the campaign cost by the 3rd or 4th month in and from there on out with 1st page rankings maintained the rest is gravy.
